Provisional tax spreads your tax bill over the year instead of leaving one large payment for assessment. The second payment for the 2027 tax year is due on the last business day of February. Because 28 February 2027 falls on a Sunday, the deadline is Friday, 26 February 2027.

How the second payment works

With the second IRP6 you estimate your taxable income for the full tax year, calculate the tax on it, and pay the difference between that amount and what you paid in your first payment (and any employees’ tax already deducted).

Getting the estimate right

SARS can charge an underestimation penalty if your estimate is too low. The rules depend on your taxable income:

  • Up to R1 million: the estimate must be at least 90% of your actual taxable income, or not less than your basic amount (generally your last assessed taxable income).
  • Above R1 million: the estimate must be at least 80% of your actual taxable income.

Late payment also attracts a penalty and interest, so submit and pay on time even if the figures are still being finalised.

How we can help

We prepare your estimate from up-to-date figures, submit the IRP6 and remind you of the payment deadline. See our individual tax services or contact us.
